Staircase Trends: Floating Design & Glass Details

The staircase has quietly become one of the most important design statements in a home. No longer just a way to get upstairs, today's staircases are sculptural centerpieces — engineered to disappear as much as they impress. From cantilevered treads to walls of glass, here's what's defining staircase design right now.

The Floating Staircase

Hidden structure, weightless look. Cantilevered treads anchor into a concealed steel stringer within the wall, or a central mono-stringer beneath the treads — either way, the supports disappear so the stairs appear to float.

Open risers, open sightlines. Removing the vertical riser between treads lets light and views travel straight through the staircase to the rooms beyond, rather than blocking them off.

Warm materials, industrial edge. Oak and maple treads soften the engineering with warmth and grain, while steel accents and fittings keep the overall look sharp and contemporary.

Glass Takes Center Stage

Frameless glass railings. Continuous tempered glass panels replace traditional balusters and posts entirely, giving unobstructed views while still meeting strict safety standards.

Hybrid glass-and-metal details. Pairing glass with stainless steel cables, wrought iron balusters, or brushed bronze handrails balances a modern look with a bit of traditional craftsmanship.

A gallery-like feel. Heavy-duty glass paired with a floating tread system creates the sense of walking through open air — clean, architectural, and full of natural light.

What to Consider Before You Build

Code compliance matters. Open-riser and glass systems still have to meet strict local building codes, including maximum gaps between treads — this is not a place to guess.

Natural light multiplies the effect. Floating and glass staircases do the most in spaces with strong natural light — positioning near windows or skylights makes the design pay off.

It's a statement piece. A well-designed staircase does double duty as art and architecture — it's often the first thing guests see, so it's worth the extra planning.

Whether you're dreaming of a floating staircase or a full glass railing system, we can help you design and build a staircase that's both a structural showpiece and code-compliant from day one.
